There are basically three main types hamster housing you can purchase for your hamster; wire cages, plastic tube cages, and aquariums. A good cage should have plenty of room for accessories and room to roam. Wire cages: Wire cages offer good ventilation. Hamsters like the wires to climb. Dwarf hamsters should not have the wire more than 0.5 cm apart while syrians can have wires 1 cm apart. The only acceptable wire cage have wire tops that attach to a wire bottom. If there is a metal grate on the bottom, it needs to be removed as hamsters could get hurt by this and it interferes with digging. Plastic tube cages: These cages can connect to addition accessories and other cages. Some brands include CritterTrail (by SuperPet) S.A.M. and Habitrail. Those brands are interchangable. Some houses are part wire and part plastic. Gizmo recommends at least one hybrid to ensure proper ventilation if you go this route. Aquariums: Tanks are also acceptable and offer a spacious house but have lower air circulation and do not offer the opportunity to climb. A cover must also be used as your hamster can escape. Gizmo has a CritterTrail 3. He has a 10 gallon tank attached. I will have pictures in January. |
