The two most common types of hamsters are the Syrian hamster and the dwarf hamster. Many pet stores have fancy names for the same breed. For example, blackbear hamsters are just black teddybears (Syrians). Dwarf hamsters are about half the size of golden hamsters. They are social and are probably better kept as pairs. It is best to get two that are already housed together. Syrians are solitary animals and need to be housed seperately after 8 weeks. They are slower moving than dwarfs and are somewhat easier to tame. What type of hamster you want is the first decision you need to make as dwarfs and syrians have different cage needs. |
