Hamster Behavior

Hamsters are nocturnal, and sleep through most of the day. It is tempting for owners to want to wake their hamsters to play when they are asleep. This is very disruptive to your hamster and causes stress. Your hamster will probably bite. Hamsters can also get stressed by an improper environment; too small of a cage or frequent loud noises for example. Stress can make your hamster sick or even die.

Dwarf hamsters are faster moving than syrians are.

Try making time to play with your hamster in the evening or early morning when its more likely to be awake. If you must wake your hamster, gently wake him by talking to him then giving him a treat. Do not grab poke or shove him. You should only wake your hamster if he NEEDS to be; for example, you might need to wake him to go to the vet.
